The trap in “nature vs. nurture”

by Bruce Kasanoff on November 23, 2009

Few questions better summarize the limitations of our thinking over the past century than “nature or nurture?” The question implies that we need to pick one, that we need to reduce the differences between people down to the simplest possible level.

In fact, the reverse is true. We need to delve as deeply as possible into these differences, so as to be able to bring out the best in each person.

Both nature and nurture impact each human being. Two genetically identical human beings, raised differently, will be different. So will genetically different humans raised identically.

But why do we feel the need to pick one? It makes so much more sense to understand each influence to the greatest depth possible.
